Zazo is a singer of such caliber that even René Jacobs—known for his particularly exacting standards in vocal performance—has recognized him as “the most versatile countertenor of his generation.” Here, accompanied only by the lute and his voice, he delivers a performance rich in subtle nuance. The album features works by Dowland, Purcell, and their contemporaries that explore themes of madness and midnight, unfolding a tranquil yet somewhat mysterious world—much like a moonlit night that quietly illuminates the light and darkness within the human heart. The lute is played by Shizuko Noiri, a member of the early music ensemble Les Plaisirs de Parnasse. Noiri is also a master musician with extensive experience performing in operas conducted by Jacobs.
