Recorded in September 2009, this production attempts to recreate a private concert held in the hall of the Count Lobkowitz’s residence during Beethoven’s lifetime. With wine glasses in hand, the audience sits comfortably at tables, and in this relaxed atmosphere, Immazer and Anima Eterna deliver a performance with sharp, incisive dynamics. This is an extremely fascinating video that not only perfectly captures Imazel conducting—always bringing us fresh surprises—but also features close-ups of the virtuoso musicians playing a variety of period instruments. The natural horn produces a completely flawless, pleasing sound, truly showcasing the high caliber of Anima Eterna’s members. Given that it’s a dance hall, the acoustics are exceptionally rich. The roar of the wind instruments, the thunder of the timpani, and the resonance of the strings all ring out directly and beautifully. The documentary is also fascinating. The rehearsal footage captures a playful Immazer making strange noises to make the ensemble members laugh. The string players demonstrate how the tone changes depending on whether or not they use vibrato, and the wind players explain the characteristics of their instruments in an easy-to-understand manner. It’s fascinating to hear Immazell discuss the ensemble’s history, as well as to hear the members speak about him. Wearing a red scarf, Immazell visits sites in Vienna associated with Beethoven, walking through them while providing various insights. The content is also fascinating, including a reference to Czerny’s remark that the opening motif, “Fate Knocks at the Door,” was originally inspired by the chirping of birds in Beethoven’s garden. At the end of the film, Immazer also discusses the significance of performing on period instruments, making both the performance and the documentary deeply engaging. King International
