Jansons, whom Xu Guangjun also holds in high regard as “one of the most competent conductors in the world” and “the Solti of the 21st century,” returns with his next new release featuring the Concertgebouw Orchestra: Poulenc’s monumental “Gloria” and Honegger’s Symphony No. 3. The opening of Poulenc’s “Gloria” strikes the listener’s ears and heart head-on with the resplendent, dazzling timbre of the wind section, resounding above a rich, full-bodied string sound. The opening of the fifth movement, “Dominus Deus,” features a delicate interplay of winds shifting in subtle hues—a true showcase of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s mastery. Born in 1961, Orgonažova hails from Bratislava (the same hometown as Hrubelová) and has frequently performed with artists such as Aronköhr, Mest, and Gardiner. As one of today’s most accomplished sopranos, she is active primarily in Europe. She also participated in the recording of “Beethoven: Christ on the Mount of Olives” (HMC901802), conducted by Kent Nagano. Honegger’s Symphony No. 3 is a work centered on the composer’s sense of guilt regarding war and his yearning for peace, and it is one of Jansons’s signature pieces. From the very opening of the first movement, an intense sense of restlessness and anxiety drives both Jansons and the orchestra to perform at full throttle, creating a truly overwhelming impact. The prayer-like music at the conclusion of the third movement features a violin solo of striking beauty, resulting in a performance that could be described as nothing short of divine.
