Giormi, the Italian maestro leading the early music scene The long-awaited sequel to the “French Suites” is finally here! Giormi’s “French Suites” Nos. 1–3 had already been released (PAS-984). We’ve been on the edge of our seats waiting for this long-awaited sequel, but the disc featuring the final three movements is finally here! Paired with the major-key French Suites are two minor-key toccatas bursting with dramatic musical ideas. Giulmi, a specialist in early music who continues to be at the forefront of the field as a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, showcases the very essence of Bach in this highly anticipated, powerful recording. Giulmi explains that “French Suites” is not a title Bach himself assigned; while the works do exhibit a French aesthetic, they are based on the traditional German suite form. Bach was certainly familiar with Couperin and Louis Marchand, but the structure of these suites is fundamentally rooted in the styles of Böhme and Froberger. Furthermore, the Toccata—a relatively early work—shows a marked influence from the Italian composer Frescobaldi. This program offers a glimpse into the musical world of Bach, who, while incorporating various stylistic elements, remained rooted in the German tradition to develop his own unique compositional style.
