Description:
The poems (odes) of Horace, the poet of ancient Rome's golden age, were set to music by many composers since the Renaissance. However, long before that, in the early Middle Ages (such as the Carolingian Renaissance), they were also sung to melodies in monasteries and schools. This album represents the world's first recording attempt to reconstruct how Horace was sung in those times. It is based on meticulous research and decipherment of the "neumatic notation" (an early form of musical notation) found in manuscripts dating from the 9th to 11th centuries, preserved in places like Montpellier, Paris, and St. Petersburg. Performing is Stefano Alvarello, an Italian early music performer and scholar who is also active as a member of the medieval music ensemble "Bella Gerit." In addition to singing, he personally plays the kithara (an ancient guitar) and the lyre (an ancient harp), plucked string instruments used since ancient Greek and Roman times.
