A magnificent dialogue between voice and instruments that flourished in Milan under the Spanish Viceroy! From the high-quality early music label “Passacaille” in Belgium comes an intriguing album that sheds light on “Milan under Habsburg (Spanish Viceroy) rule”—a period often overlooked in the history of Italian music. Although Milan lost its political influence when the Sforza family ceded power and the city became a Spanish possession, it blossomed with a rich, unique culture under the patronage of Archbishop Federico Borromeo. At the heart of this program is the “canzon-motet,” a unique genre found nowhere else outside the Milan region. It features a structure in which a vocal ensemble begins by singing a polyphonic motet, to which an instrumental ensemble responds with a lively canzon, ultimately leading to a musical dialogue between the two, akin to a double choir. Furthermore, this recording features highly expressive madrigals employing chromaticism by Francesco Rognoni Taeggio—a violin virtuoso and master of improvisational diminutions (passaggi/ornaments)—as well as highly ornamented versions of Palestrina’s works. Furthermore, to demonstrate the innovative nature of Giuseppe Gallo, who has traditionally been overlooked, the program concludes with his monumental “Magnificat,” written in the canzone-motet form. Led by world-renowned cornetto virtuoso Bruce Dickey, the instrumental ensemble—along with an elite vocal ensemble spearheaded by Hana Brašiková—skillfully interweaves strings and wind instruments to recreate the three-dimensional, rich acoustic space of Milan during that era.
