A new recording by Jan de Vinne, a master of the Baroque flute who, as executive producer of the high-quality Belgian early music label “Passacaille,” has brought numerous acclaimed albums to the world. Playing a Quantz-model flute he crafted himself, this excellent project sheds light on the works of Charles (Carl Friedrich) Weideman, a little-known composer who has remained hidden in the shadows of music history. Born in Germany, Weidmann moved to London in the 1720s, where he served as a principal flutist in Handel’s opera orchestra. At that time in London, the flute was all the rage among the wealthy classes as a symbol of education and refinement, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after teachers among the aristocracy. He later rose to become an official musician at the British court. This album features selections from his *12 Sonatas for Flute*, published around 1737, when his career was in full bloom. His style belongs to the clear-cut Gallant style, characterized by purposeful, song-like melodies that go beyond mere ornamentation. Combining a refined melancholy reminiscent of his contemporary, the French composer Leclair, with a dramatic sense of scale that at times evokes Rameau, these works reveal how he established his own unique style within London’s diverse musical milieu.
