Liszt played by Aurelia Vișovan! World's first period instrument recording on Liszt's own instrument! Aurelia Vișovan (Visoavan), a Romanian pianist and winner of the fortepiano category at the Bruges International Early Music Competition in 2019—often called "the world's most prestigious early music competition"—presents this critically important Liszt album. The program features the "12 Grand Études S.137 (1837 edition)," the direct source material for the famous "Études d'Exécution Transcendante S.139 (1852 edition)." This version is notoriously difficult to perform, famously described by Schumann as "a study in storm and terror" and stating "there are probably only ten or twelve people in the world who can play this piece." The album's greatest distinction is that it is the "world's first recording of this work on a period instrument (historical piano)." While several recordings exist using modern pianos, no attempt had been made to tackle this challenging work on an instrument of the period. The instrument used here is a restored 1873 Steinway, housed in the Rococo Salon at Steinway House in Bayreuth, a place associated with Liszt.In his later years, Liszt frequently visited Bayreuth to see his daughter Cosima and stepson Richard Wagner. He played this very piano many times in this salon, for friends and acquaintances, and occasionally in public. This is a precious recording capturing the sound of the instrument on which Liszt himself played, in the historic room adorned with original photographs of Liszt covering an entire wall. Vichován's choice of a period instrument over a modern one stems not solely from historical interest. The 1837 edition of the score contains Liszt's unique performance markings—tempo fluctuations, lines indicating shorter pauses than fermatas—later omitted in revised editions. She explains that these delicate Romantic nuances are more naturally expressed through the decay and touch of a period instrument than a modern piano. The "True Transcendental Etudes," which Liszt considered complete yet was forced to revise due to their extreme difficulty, are vividly revived through instruments that know Liszt intimately.
