A Masterful Program That Invites You to Explore Bach’s Vast Universe Through Arrangements Although only three of Bach’s violin sonatas with basso continuo (BWV 1021, 1023, and 1024) survive today, it is believed that he actually composed many more. By incorporating arrangements into the program, this album allows listeners to sense, in some vague way, the full scope of Bach’s work—which we can no longer know today—and the free and vast possibilities of his creativity. The Sonata in F major (BWV 1022) with obbligato harpsichord is an arrangement of the Sonata in G major (BWV 1038) for flute, violin, and basso continuo, in which the flute part is entrusted to the harpsichord’s right hand. The album also includes arrangements for solo harpsichord based on the unaccompanied violin sonatas; the Harpsichord Sonata (BWV 964) is an arrangement of the No. 2 in A minor (BWV 1003), and the Adagio (BWV 968) is an arrangement of the No. 3 in C major (BWV 1005). Each has its own charm, making you want to compare them with the original compositions. Violinist Mayumi Hirasaki is a renowned artist based in Cologne who frequently performs with Lorenzo Giormi. She is also a member of Concerto Köln and is known for her recordings with Carminola. The eloquent harpsichord playing of Giurmi, a grand master of the Italian early music scene, is a highlight, and it is a great pleasure that the album includes not only ensemble pieces but also solo works.
