Announcing his new album Croak Dream (released on Play It Again Sam), South London-born, Atlanta-based artist Puma Blue (real name: Jacob Allen) explores this philosophical question through bold lyrics and bold production, offering glimpses of his love for trip hop, dub techno, jungle, and progressive electronic music. Holy Waters, a deliberate departure from the intimate atmosphere of his early EPs and 2021 debut album In Praise of Shadows, earned critical acclaim from outlets including NPR, The FADER, Clash, NME, Paste Magazine, FLOOD, and Northern Transmissions. This new full-band album, Croak Dream, follows Holy Waters. "I saw what Puma Blue could become when I opened myself up to collaboration," Allen reflects on the outcome of 'Holy Waters'. While the creation of 'Croak Dream' initially began after the 'Holy Waters' tour concluded, he paused his focus on new material to explore a creative detour. Seeking new ways to express the powerful sound of 'Holy Waters', Allen channeled that energy into the tracks featured on 'antichamber' and its sister album 'extchamber', released in February 2025, immersing himself in acoustic textures and ethereal, dreamlike vocals."I always wanted to be an artist who keeps evolving," Allen says, having immersed himself in the raw, unedited songwriting of 'antichamber' and completed his first album in 12 months, 'Croak Dream', without stopping the creative flow of consciousness. Croak Dream's sound—woven from trip-hop's low-hanging irises, Radiohead's visceral anguish, and Allen's distinctive vocals—soars from breathtakingly intimate moments to the meticulously constructed title track. Like ivy entwining a grand edifice, it perpetually blooms in myriad directions, inducing rapture. Recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios with co-producer Sam Petts-Davies (The Smile, Warpaint), the album employed a unique approach distinct from Puma Blue's previous work: sessions were recorded directly to tape."I didn't want to make an album like 'Holy Waters,' which just captures the band playing in a room," Allen explains. He and Petts-Davies brought in fragments of songs, the band improvised over them, and later looped those improvisational sessions to incorporate into the final recording. This process made the album feel alive, surprising even those involved. "When we sent the finished album to the band, they reacted as if they were hearing themselves play these songs for the very first time," Allen says.
