They also worked closely with the band on production duties. New Last Name is an adventurous album, not only in sound, but also in theme, as the title suggests: a new beginning. It's a play within an album. There's a lot going on in there. It can be enjoyed simply as an album, but there are characters, performances, and stage directions. The listener can decide their own story, but we want them to be immersed in it," explains frontman Sean Murphy O'Neill. Despite the narrative threads that tie it together, I will admit that New Last Name is not really theater. In fact, it's a collection of our most condensed pop songs alongside our strangest experiments," Murphy O'Neill continues about the album. We really liked their debut LP, Guitar Music.The freedom to be prepared to sabotage melodies with mindful titles and noise appealed strongly. And it was clear that beneath the unstoppable experimentalism and layers of chaos lay some very sophisticated songwriting. So we were very excited to see how they would approach their next LP. Recording a second album is the most critical time in an artist's career. It is the moment when competence catches up with enthusiasm and the real magic happens, or, conversely, when you struggle to catch up with the initial surge of inspiration (the dreaded second slump). As soon as we heard the demo, we knew Courting was stepping up to the next level," says Gary Jarman of The Cribs, describing his collaboration with Courting in the studio. We created a great pop album that sounds like a hit.
