Uruguay's Azimuth! Band Opa's long-awaited CD/LP release of Latin Jazz Funk! The Beatles follower band, Los Shakers, was popular not only in Uruguay but all over South America, but in the early 70's, seeking further musical adventure, the Fatruso brothers, Ugo and Oswaldo, came to the U.S. and formed Opa with Ringo Seelman, who had come to the U.S. earlier. Opa was a crossover band formed by the Fatruso brothers, Ugo and Oswaldo, in the early 70's. They were playing at a nightclub one day when they caught the attention of renowned producer Larry Rosen. This is how "Back Home" ('75) was recorded on a 4-track TEAC 3340. Later, this recording became a demo and was signed to the Milestone label in the US. The album was unearthed in the mid-90's and became the talk of the town.The dense ensemble and spacy synths of "Goldenwings" at the beginning of the album are superb, "African Bird" adopts the rhythm of Afro-Uruguayan music = Candombe, "One - One + One is Two" shows the influence of the Beatles - Bossa Nova, "Corre Nina" is one of the best songs on the album, and "Casa Forte" is a mellow funk song composed by Edu Lobo from Brazil. The "Corre Nina," a killer jazz-funk song, "Casa Forte," a Brazilian Edu Lobo composition, and the mellow funk "Back Home" are all on this album. The band's phenomenal songwriting and musicality is a fusion of soulful rock, jazz-funk, and uniquely Uruguayan music, spacy synthesizers as good as Azimuth's, and the intensity that has led them to perform with Ron Carter, Aiart Moreira, Milton Nascimento, and others. The groove of their performance is still shocking even today. This album has been sampled by Flying Lotus and Madlib in recent years, and is considered a holy grail for the rare groove and hip-hop generation.Highly recommended for fans of Azimuth, Weather Report, Cortex, and Headhunters.
