A Norwegian early music ensemble brings to life the music of 17th-century London’s “Playhouse” (theater)! “The Alehouse Sessions,” which caused a huge sensation across Europe and the United States—including the UK and Germany—is a unique and one-of-a-kind project launched by the Baroque Solistene, a period ensemble formed in Bergen, Norway, in 2005, and its artistic director, Bytte Aike. The sequel to that groundbreaking work—which recreated the music of 17th-century London alehouses—*The Playhouse Sessions* is finally here! The story begins with the thrilling sessions held in “alehouses” by musicians who were barred from theaters and churches during the Puritan Revolution, then moves on to the Restoration under Charles II, the Glorious Revolution, which saw the ascension of William III and Mary II. The musical culture of the alehouse evolved into that of the playhouse (theater) and music hall. As tickets and season passes began to be sold, this paved the way for the establishment of the first public concert halls, featuring opera, masquerades, dance, comedy, and more. From Shakespeare, improv comedy, juggling, Purcell’s music, folk songs, and sea shanties—the exciting sounds of the playhouse, rich with these quintessentially British elements, are brought to life by Bytte Aike’s incisive violin and a brilliant ensemble of period instrument players.
