Music that sounds as if Mussorgsky and Bach had been “Ukrainized” ◆ A Patriotic Composer Born in Kyiv in 1925, Shamo was a Ukrainian composer active during the Soviet era who was deeply inspired by Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Bach, and Schumann. He is also a well-known patriot, best known as the composer of “My Kyiv,” which became the city’s official anthem. At the age of 17, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Red Army and served on the front lines from Stalingrad to Berlin as a medical orderly. ◆ Emphasis on Folk Material and Traditional Techniques Although he sustained a leg injury during combat, upon his return he enrolled in the Kyiv State Conservatory, where he garnered attention by winning the school’s composition competition nearly every year; he also joined the Union of Ukrainian Composers while still a student. His talent attracted attention, and he was approached with an offer to move to Moscow, but Shamo, driven by a strong love for his homeland, declined. He forged his own unique path by incorporating folk musical elements and traditional classical techniques, along with chromaticism, French Impressionist-style color, and even elements of jazz, forging his own unique path. His style—in which melancholic sorrow and melancholy alternate with the exuberance inspired by dance music—captivates listeners, complemented by his exceptional pedaling technique.
