This album presents a series of laments and dirges sung in 16th- and 17th-century Italy within the all-female environment of convents. ◆ Musical life in convents was often surprisingly rich. There is even a record from 1592 of a traveler visiting Genoa who encountered nuns playing the organ, violin, and lira da gamba, and singing beautifully. 【Performers】 ◆Capella Artemisia is an ensemble specializing in convent music founded by Candice Smith, with an all-female lineup of both vocalists and instrumentalists. The ensemble aims not only to reproduce the musical scores but also to convey the social and religious context in which the nuns of that era performed this music. 【Recording】 ◆Recorded in July 2024 at the Church of Santa Cristina della Fondazza in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy. In addition to the nine female vocalists, the recording captures the sounds of the violin, viola da gamba, baroque harp, lirone, harpsichord, and organ in a three-dimensional mix. 【Product Specifications】 ◆The case is made of 10mm-thick polystyrene (jewel case). The included booklet (English, 12 pages) features commentary by Artistic Director Candice Smith. Manufactured in the EU, the disc is produced by Optimal Media, a German company well-known for its work with major labels.
