Description:

This work by the priest-composer is quite a masterpiece! [Overview] ◆ Fernando de Luca, an explorer of lesser-known works, has recorded a piece by “Abbot Gravier.” ◆Jean-Baptiste Gravier (1723–1799), a composer and priest known by the nickname “the Abbot,” traveled to Paris in 1759—while serving as organist at Bordeaux Cathedral—to publish his own works. He later returned to Bordeaux and soon moved to Saintes, where he became a canon at Saint-Pierre Cathedral; he died at the age of 76, ten years after the French Revolution. 【Track Listing】 ◆This album features the complete “Six Sonatas for Harpsichord,” published in Paris in 1759. French music during this period was transitioning from the traditional French style epitomized by Rameau to the clearer “sonata” form of Italian origin, and Gravier’s works are both intricate and substantial. 【Performer】 ◆Fernando De Luca is one of the most important performers currently playing a leading role in the revival of forgotten 18th-century harpsichord music. His playing style has been described as “disciplined yet never rigid,” which is a significant advantage when performing lesser-known works with few points of comparison. 【Recording】 ◆The recording was made in August 2022 in Borgo Ticino, in the province of Novara, Piedmont, northern Italy. As this is a familiar venue, the recording is well-executed and the sound quality is excellent. The tambourin in the third movement of Sonata No. 1 is particularly powerful. 【Product Specifications】 ◆The case is made of 10mm-thick polystyrene (jewel case). The included booklet (English, 8 pages) features commentary by Francesca Scotti, a writer based in Italy and Japan and a graduate of the Milan Conservatory. Manufactured in the EU, the disc is produced by Optimal Media, a German company well-known for its work with major labels.
