It produces sound through a mouthpiece, and because its finger holes are arranged along the front, it can play the entire diatonic scale. The gentle, flute-like tone of the gemshorn—a mellow and memorable sound—was particularly well-suited for both sacred and domestic music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. [Track Listing] ◆This album features gemshorn performances, combined with lute and percussion, of dance pieces spanning the 12th to the 17th centuries. From wistful, contemplative pieces to dance tunes that are at times almost savagely powerful, this is a truly captivating program. ◆Spanning over 500 years, the collection is organized into the following three historical periods: [Medieval]: Melodies from France, England, Spain, and Italy dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries. The focus is on secular music from the era of monophonic chant, including the courtly “Estampida,” the “Carmina Burana” anthology of wandering students’ poetry, and “Cantigas” in praise of the Virgin Mary. 【Renaissance】: 16th century. Selections of branles and galliards from famous published dance collections of the time, by composers such as Athénain, Suzart, and Gervais. 【Baroque】: 17th century. Works featuring more refined rhythms and structures, such as French village dances and Playford’s *English Dancing Master*. [Performers] ◆ The performance is by “Il Giardino delle Muse,” an early music ensemble based in Italy. ◆ Simone Elle: Leader and gemshorn player. He alternates between alto and tenor gemshorns to deliver expressive performances. ◆ Hugo Nastrucci: Plays the medieval lute, bass lute, and oud. He forms the backbone of the harmony and rhythm. ◆Mauro Occhione: Historical percussion. He provides the dynamic rhythm section. [Recording] ◆Recorded at the Bartók Studio in Bernareggio, Lombardy, northern Italy. The three-dimensional soundstage authentically captures the trio’s performance. [Product Specifications] ◆ The case is made of 10mm-thick polystyrene (jewel case). The included booklet (English and Italian, 12 pages) features commentary by Simone Elle, who performed on the album. Manufactured in the EU; the disc is produced by Optimal Media of Germany, a company well-known for its work with major labels.
