A delightful piano concerto featuring a scherzo reminiscent of a bumblebee's flight, among other fine pieces! A collection of 20th-century French works performed by the string orchestra "Chicoria Consort," named after the scientific name "Chicoria" of the stork depicted on The Hague's coat of arms. The style adheres to classical tradition while spiced with modern compositional techniques, fully showcasing the expressive power of the string orchestra. This album features works by Jacques Castérade, a disciple of Messiaen who won the Prix de Rome for "Pandora's Box," alongside pieces by André Jolivet and Daniel Lesur, who formed the musical circle "La Jeune France" with Messiaen. The ever-excellent performance by the resident string orchestra, the Cicogna Consort, is vivid down to the finest detail. Paolo Giacometti's sparkling, light touch in the piano concerto is perfectly suited to the work, and the delight reminiscent of "Flight of the Bumblebee" in the second movement scherzo is particularly memorable. Recorded in April 2025 at the Westerkerk in Schiedam, in the Rotterdam metropolitan area, Netherlands. CD running time is approximately 73 minutes. Case is made of 10mm thick polystyrene (jewel case).The booklet (English, 16 pages) includes liner notes by conductor Dick van Hasteelen. Manufactured in the EU, the disc is produced by Germany's Optimal Media, a major label.
