Ensemble Giardino Di Delizie
Description:
Recorded in the historic church of Trevi, once part of the Papal States, featuring music by composers of the Papal States. Carlo Mannelli's Trio Sonata Collection, also known as Corelli's teacher. Mannerini, a composer, violinist, and castrato singer active in Rome during the Papal States' peak territorial extent (over 44,000 km²), worked not only in the courts of cardinals and nobles but also for churches, religious orders, and musicians' organizations. While renowned as a violinist, he also devoted himself energetically to composition. Unfortunately, most of his scores were lost, but fortunately, the Trio Sonata Collection Op.2, named for twelve individuals, survived intact. Here, following Trio Sonata Collection Op.3, it is performed by the Rome Early Music Ensemble. The Trio Sonatas, Op. 2, is a collection where each of the 14 pieces is dedicated to a colleague associated with the chapel of the Monastery of San Marcello, where Mannelli belonged. Notable among them is Stradella, famous for his wild anecdotes. The origin of these dedications remains unknown, but they certainly add an intriguing mystery to the work. Each piece consists of four, five, or six movements, distinguished by innovative melodic inventiveness, occasionally bold harmonies, rich timbres, and expressive chromatic phrases. Founded in Rome in 2013, "Ensemble Giardino di Delizie" is a period instrument ensemble featuring Polish and Italian women. This vibrant chamber ensemble performs on Baroque violin, Baroque cello, theorbo, Baroque guitar, harpsichord, and organ, maintaining a pitch of A=415Hz. Recorded from October 24 to 29, 2023, at the Church of St. Francis in Trevi, Umbria, central Italy. This monastery-style church in Trevi was once part of the Papal States. The total running time of the two CDs is approximately 105 minutes. The case is made of 10mm thick polystyrene (a jewel case designed to hold two discs). The booklet (English, 12 pages) includes liner notes by musicologist Antonella D'Vidio, who teaches at the University of Florence's Faculty of Music. Manufactured in the EU, the discs are produced by Germany's Optimal Media, a company well-known for its work with major labels.
