Description:

A collection of works, including pieces in the Fantastic Style (Stilus Fantasticus) [Overview] ◆The seemingly endless chromatic ascending and descending passages that appear toward the end of Rossi’s signature work, Toccata No. 7, are famous for leaving listeners with a sense of the eerie dissonance. ◆ Manuel Tomadin, a keyboardist dedicated to introducing rare works, originally earned his harpsichord degree with a perfect score on a thesis about the Goldberg Variations. Since becoming a musician, however, he has devoted himself to performing and unearthing minor works—a labor-intensive endeavor—and has recorded works by composers such as Hassler, Elbach, and Martini. 【Track Listing】 ◆Includes Rossi’s masterpiece, “Toccata and Corrente.” While inheriting the counterpoint of his teacher Frescobaldi, he applied extreme chromatic techniques—similar to those of Gesualdo—to the keyboard. ●The Toccata features sudden modulations, intense rhythmic shifts, and unexpected dissonances, while the Corrente presents a series of elegant yet occasionally somber dance pieces that seem to release the tension of the Toccata. 【Performer】 ◆Manuel Tomadin is one of the most prolific recording artists among Italian organ and harpsichordists today. Tomadin is also deeply involved in the research and preservation of historical instruments, and for this recording, he has paid meticulous attention to tuning and registration to capture the boldness inherent in Rossi’s music. 【Recording】 ◆For this album, the organ and harpsichord are used selectively to suit the character of each piece. The organ used is a 17th-century instrument built by Giovanni Battista Gavignelli, located at the Church of St. Anne in Bellinzago Novarese, in the province of Novara, Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. ◆The harpsichord is a 1681 model by Giovanni Battista Giusti, built by Andrea Maior in 2006. The recording took place at the Church of St. Paolino, Bishop, in the village of Poggio Terza Armata, in the Province of Gorizia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. 【Product Specifications】 ◆The case is made of 10mm-thick polystyrene (multi-case). The included booklet (English, 8 pages) features commentary by the performer, Tomadin. Manufactured in the EU; the disc was produced by Optimal Media, a German company well-known for its work with major labels.
