Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Waslik’s latest work, *Irreparable Parables*, is an ambitious project centered on the “voice”—a rare focus for him. He did not sing himself, but instead entrusted the songs to singers from around the world, compiling remotely recorded vocals to complete the album. The diverse lineup of contributors includes Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian, as well as Gruff Rhys, Saya Ueno (Tenniscoats), and Peter Brewis. The different voices on each track are symbolically depicted on the album cover as six different birds. Wasslik composed the music himself, creating a unique soundscape that spans classical, jazz, and ambient genres. The soundscape, woven from a diverse array of instruments—including brass, woodwinds, a six-piece string section, Mellotron, and Fender Rhodes—delicately portrays nostalgia, tranquility, and the fragility and resilience of the human spirit. “Love Is a Life That Lasts Forever,” which explores hope, and “Spectators in the Absence of God,” which confronts distant suffering, form the core of the work, culminating in an instrumental piece featuring piano and strings that leads to a quiet resolution. An album that stays close to the heart and supports the soul.
