Nering & Orsop! Szymanowski's "Concerto-Symphony"! Karol Szymanowski is considered Poland's greatest composer after Chopin. From his early R. Bogner-Strauß-influenced late Romantic style, through Impressionism and Orientalism, he ultimately established a style that fused his country's folk music with his own unique idiom. This recording features two masterpieces representing Szymanowski's later years. As the subtitle "Sinfonia Concertante" suggests, Symphony No. 4 is a major work that functions as a true piano concerto, with the solo piano interacting with the orchestra on equal terms. The accompanying Mazurkas, Op. 50 are piano solo pieces that inherit the Chopin tradition while incorporating elements of folk songs from the Tatra Mountains (Highlander music), which Szymanowski cherished. The soloist is Simon Nearing, a young virtuoso celebrated by the Polish piano world. He was the sole Polish finalist at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, winning the Audience Award, and went on to triumph at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in 2017.Marin Alsop, the acclaimed maestro who has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice since 2023, successfully led a Japan tour in September 2025 with the same ensemble plus Hayato Tsunoda and Seiya Kamei.
