The band has performed at Giles Peterson's We Out Here Festival, SXSW, and the EFG London Jazz Festival, and has been featured on compilations by Soul Jazz Records and Majestic Casual. The UK jazz outsider Shrimp Soda has released his latest album, "frank dean and andrew" on the Tru Thoughts label. The result of an improvisational session held in a rented house in the countryside of southern England, the album transcends the boundaries of jazz and boldly incorporates elements of all genres, including electronics, post-punk, grime, and dub, creating a world that sounds like a "musical laboratory". Reflecting on the album's production, the band said, "This album was recorded at the end of a year of intense ups and downs. The music reflects that tension in a strange way... The feeling of the songs is very specific and quirky; a lot of UK jazz tends to be over-arranged and the mood is generally optimistic, but this album is the opposite in every way. says the artist. The new album is the "future of UK jazz," with ambience influenced by Brial, Zomby, and Joe Ammon Jones, and a modern roughness that echoes Athletic Progression, Yummy Online, and Playboy Carti.Throughout, a nostalgic, yet somehow contemporary sense of malaise and humor intersects, creating a one-of-a-kind worldview. The album's central track, "red in tokyo," features Chinese-Vietnamese-British rapper Jiang Bo. A grime-like distorted flow cuts in over snarling guitars and sharp-edged drums. The band describes the song, which Jiangbo describes as "a tense moment in Tokyo," as "grime-esque angst mixed with elements of no-wave and post-punk. The band also creates a strange and disturbing sound world on "horticulturalists nightmare (birds)," where dubby bass lines and animalistic noises intermingle. The dance tune tempo and atmosphere of "grilly" is intertwined with the brooding sounds and effects of Burial. The title track, "frank dean and andrew," embodies an air of contemporary indifference and "stay-at-home" feeling. The chilled, emotional chord progression and nebulous trombone resonate with a lo-fi quality. In the latter half of the song, a flugelhorn joins in, slowly deepening the emotion of the song. The last song, "insectoid creatures are infesting the land," is a cinematic piece that begins with chaotic noise and improvisation, eventually rising to a melody that evokes hope.
