Two cultural backgrounds are expressed by superimposing them on traditional music and folklore Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, whose grandfather was 1950s trumpeter Terry Brown and who has contributed to works by Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, and Swing Out Sister, has released his latest album, "A Paradise In The Hold" in color! The album features 10 songs that express her two cultural backgrounds by juxtaposing her own experiences as a Bahraini-British woman with traditional music and folklore. Through a grand scale of innovation and tradition, she masterfully blends ancient rhythms with modern performance techniques. This work pays homage to the sad songs of Bahraini pearl-clutchers, the strength of Arab women, and the rhythms of traditional women's drum circles, but it is also the story of Yazz's own 10-year journey of self-discovery. In addition, this album marks the first time Yazz has attempted to write lyrics in both English and Arabic, adding a new dimension to her rich sound.Co-performers include Natacha Atlas, the queen of ethnic trance, and percussionist Corrina Silvester, among other splendid collaborators.
