Description:
A collection of works written by Holst for SPGS, including world premiere and professional premiere recordings! The English Music Festival's (EMF) own label, EM Records, has been releasing a series of unknown and new works from modern and contemporary Britain. EM Records, which has been releasing at least one or more world premiere recordings, is proud to present a rare recording by Gustav Holst, including a rare world premiere. Holst was not only a composer, but also held several teaching positions, the most important and longest of which was at St. Paul's Girls' School (SPGS) in London. He was the director of music at SPGS from 1905 to 1934, during which time the famous "The Planets" was composed. In addition to the much-loved masterpieces "St. Paul Suite" and "Brook Green Suite" (Brook Green is the name of the place where SPGS is located), the album also includes "Gavotte," which was originally part of the Brook Green Suite, and seven choral pieces from "Alcestis," a playground song. In addition to "Gavotte," which was originally part of the Brookgreen Suite, "Playground Songs," and seven choral pieces from "Alcestis" are recorded for the first time in the world. The world premiere recording of the masque "Visions of Dame Christiaan," composed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of St. Paul's School (the predecessor of SPGS), is a professional recording. Lee O'Hara, who conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra, was the music director of SPGS at the time of the recording. Paulina Voices (Paulina is a nickname for SPGS students) is a choir composed of current SPGS students. EM Records director Em Marshall-Ruck, himself an Old Paulina (SPGS alumnus), is also a reader.
