Debut disc by the young British ancient music ensemble Knoxward, playing Uccellini, the founder of violin music, with a lot of charm! Debut disc by young British violinist Conor Grismanis and his 2018 ancient music ensemble, Knoxward. It features the violin sonatas of early Italian Baroque composer Uccellini. Uccellini was a composer who contributed greatly to the development of violin technique, and his violin language is rich with wide leaps, use of high positions, and fast-moving running phrases that can be heard even today. His musical style is called "Stills Fantastiques," a completely new music of the time written with free inspiration. The emotional changes and turns of phrase are unpredictable, and the melodies, while very catchy, surprise us with their bold improvisatory nature. The Sonata for two violins, with its charming interplay, is also a delight to the ear. This album is a vivid reminder of the great prosperity of instrumental music that flourished during the Baroque era. In this recording, Grismanis plays an Andrea Amati violin from 1572, which is said to be "the oldest fully playable violin in the world.This valuable instrument was made 450 years ago, in the pre-Uccellini era.
