Godard’s Unaccompanied Sonata and More A Collection of Rare Violin Pieces Performed by Virtuosos Titled “The Hidden Violin,” this album features rare solo violin pieces composed by virtuosos such as Joachim from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, including world premiere recordings. Joachim, renowned in music history for his friendships with Brahms and others; as well as his pupil Vécsey (also known as Vécchi)—who had a concerto dedicated to him by Sibelius—and other renowned Hungarian virtuosos; all of these musicians are known to have been outstanding violinists during their lifetimes. Among them, particular attention is drawn to the late 19th-century French violinist Godard, who studied under Vieuxtemps. Godard’s unaccompanied sonata, recorded here for the first time worldwide, is described in the *New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians* as “a valuable work worthy of inclusion in the violinist’s repertoire,” and the fact that it is now available to listen to is certainly cause for celebration. Born in the United Kingdom in 1970, Vaughan-Jones studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal College of Music. After graduating, he worked as an orchestral musician but later sought to deepen his expertise in chamber music by studying under the renowned Hungarian violinist, Kato Havash—a renowned Hungarian violinist, the creator of “A New Approach to Violin Technique,” and a teacher of violin and viola.
