Description:
A Collection of Ysaÿe’s Masterpieces Eugène Ysaÿe (1858‒1931) was a great Belgian violinist, composer, and conductor, often referred to as the “King of the Violin.” Ysaÿe studied under Wieniawski and Vuillaume, and later mentored renowned violinists such as Joseph Gingold, Nathan Milstein, George Enescu, and Jacques Thibaud, exerting an immeasurable influence on music history. He built a brilliant international career as a performer throughout Europe and the United States, and great composers such as Debussy, Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Ernest Chausson dedicated works to him. Ysaÿe was also a composer himself, and while his Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27, composed in 1923, are considered the pinnacle of his work, he composed numerous other pieces as well. This recording is an attempt to shed new light on those works outside of the “unaccompanied” repertoire. The *Grand Waltz for Concert, Op. 3* was composed in 1882 while Ysaÿe was on a concert tour of Norway. It is a beautifully written waltz imbued with a strong sense of nostalgia, possessing both brilliance and a high degree of technical virtuosity. Subtle homages to Wieniawski’s two polonaises can be heard throughout. *Poème élégiaque, Op. 12* was composed in 1892–93 and dedicated to Gabriel Fauré. With this work, Ysaÿe established his unique voice as a composer, clearly demonstrating the deep sense of melancholy that would later characterize his musical expression. In this piece, the G string is tuned to F, lending the lower register of the violin a dark, deep timbre reminiscent of a viola. This work had a particularly strong influence on Ernest Chausson and served as a direct model for his masterpiece *Poème*, composed three years later. Written around the same time is *Children’s Dream, Op. 14*. It is a delicate lullaby written in a single night after he learned that his son, Antoine, had contracted scarlet fever, and was dedicated to his son. Due in part to its relatively short length, it is one of the few works that Ysaÿe recorded himself during the early days of recording. Today, it remains a valuable historical document.
