Britten’s Only Pupil, Oldham A Collection of Works by Britten and Oldham Unlike other leading British composers, Britten (1913–1976) took on very few pupils. However, in 1949, he took on his only pupil: Oldham (1926–2003). Aldham studied under Britten for about three years. He subsequently made a name for himself primarily as a choral conductor. While his body of work is relatively small, it ranges from solo songs to large-scale works for choir and orchestra, all of which are remarkably successful. In particular, the works included on this disc demonstrate Aldham’s skill as a composer and the high quality of his compositions, which likely reflect the influence of Britten. ORCHIDCLASSICS
