The theme of the final volume of “FourElements,” a project Yu Kosuge has been working on for four years, is “Earth.” Yu Kosuge delivers performances characterized by an exquisite touch and unique sensibility, focusing primarily on the German Classical and Romantic periods, including Beethoven. This album is a live recording of the “Earth” program, which serves as the concluding chapter of her “FourElements” concert series, a project she has been working on since 2017. “Among the four elements—water, fire, wind, and earth—‘earth’ is the one closest to humanity. I wanted to create a program that traces the essence of humanity itself while narrating human history,” says Kosuge. Her vision is fully reflected in this selection, which, unlike her previous albums featuring short pieces, consists entirely of substantial works, each one a centerpiece in its own right. The program features Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasy, themed around “nature” and “hometown”—concepts evoked by the earth—as well as Janáček’s sonata “October 1, 1905: On the Street,” Chopin’s “Sonata No. 3,” and Dai Fujikura’s “Akiko’s Diary”—said to be based on the diary of a young girl who lost her life to the aftereffects of radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Each piece not only tells a story but also embodies the composer’s deep emotions; Kosuge carefully draws these out, weaving the music together with her uniquely rich timbre and delicate emotional expression.
