Description:
British composer Richard Panchev. His choral works have earned international acclaim for carrying on the tradition of British sacred music. He began his career as choirmaster at Ripon Cathedral in North Yorkshire, where he received composition instruction from Benjamin Britten; he later studied under Simon Preston and Francis Greer at Christ Church College, Oxford, from which he graduated. He rose to prominence with *The Defense of Henry VIII*, a commissioned work composed in 1996 to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the Christ Church Choir at the University of Oxford; which was also performed at the celebration marking composer Peter Maxwell Davies’s 80th birthday. This 2015 album features a performance by Michael Waldron—a close collaborator of Pfechev’s—and the London Choral Sinfonia. Waldron fully brings to life Panchev’s distinctive style—rooted in tradition yet setting him apart from other choral works. Naxos Japan
