Pianist Yu Kosuge has been presenting the concert series “Four Elements” (Water, Fire, Wind, Earth) since 2007. Her first installment, “Water,” has already been released on CD (ORC10092/NYCX-10037), which depicted the various forms of “Water”—ever-changing and penetrating people’s emotions—and was met with great acclaim, she has once again breathed life into a diverse collection of works in this second installment, themed around “Fire.” When one thinks of “Fire,” the first thing that comes to mind is Prometheus from mythology, who is said to have defied the gods by stealing fire and bestowing it upon humanity. Kojima takes on Liszt’s symphonic poem “Prometheus” (piano arrangement by L. Stark) and fully expresses even the gods’ wrath toward Prometheus. Another highlight of this album is that it primarily features pieces composed during World War I. Grounded in the anxieties and emotions of the people of that era, the album distinguishes between the divine and demonic aspects of fire, using bold emotional expression to depict “fire (war)” through sound. In the excerpt from Stravinsky’s *The Firebird* that closes the album, you will surely feel a massive flame created by sound, as if it were licking up the entire earth and sky. Naxos Japan
