Cellist Andrei Ionita was born in Bucharest in 1994. He began studying piano at age 5 and cello at age 8, quickly making a name for himself. Since 2012, he has studied under Jens-Peter Mainz at the Berlin University of the Arts. He won first prize at the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Competition and has garnered worldwide attention, with *The Times* hailing him as “a once-in-a-decade talent and one of the most exciting cellists.” On this album, he performs a variety of works for unaccompanied cello. Among them, the piece by Australian composer Brett Dean—said to be inspired by the music of Brian Eno—is a world premiere recording. Also included are J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 1—an essential piece when discussing works for unaccompanied cello—Kodály’s innovative Cello Sonata, and the striking “Black Run” by Henrison, a virtuoso cellist also known as a bassist in the heavy metal scene, making this a fascinating album.
