Vaughan Williams’ Hymn Melodies! Trace the diverse evolution of hymn melodies through original compositions and arrangements! Albion Records, the in-house label of the Vaughan Williams Society, has long been dedicated to showcasing the composer’s lesser-known, forgotten, and unpublished works. This album is an ambitious project that takes Vaughan Williams’s legacy of hymn melodies as its starting point to explore the breadth of diverse arrangements and reinterpretations. Vaughan Williams composed 18 original hymn melodies and arranged 37 more, primarily based on folk songs. Some of these melodies have been cherished across generations, while others are associated with hymns that are less well known. This wide range of melodies has influenced various composers, giving rise to new works and arrangements. Among them, “Mantegna”—which also serves as the album’s title—is a melody written for a hymn depicting Christ’s agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, derived from a painting by Andrea Mantegna. Francis Jackson’s orchestral variations *Homage to Vaughan Williams*, based on this melody, form the centerpiece of this album. Also included are the new work *Carillon*, commissioned for this album from organist David Briggs, as well as arrangements by Percy Whitlock and others. The rich tradition and creativity of British choral music are vividly brought to life through the London Mozart Players—the UK’s oldest chamber orchestra—the Darligge Choral Society, founded in 1944, and the expertise of William Van, who is highly acclaimed for his performances and recordings reviving forgotten vocal and choral works by British composers.
