This is a collection of vocal works by British contemporary composer Bert Whistle (1934–), a member of the “Manchester School.” As someone originally known for his work in theatrical music, he is highly skilled in the treatment of the voice, and this collection features numerous distinctive and mystical pieces. One need only listen to *The Death of Orpheus*—composed in 1970 and commissioned by the renowned British soprano Jane Manning (who specializes particularly in contemporary works)—to grasp his distinctive style. As if foreshadowing Orpheus’s tragic death, the instrumental ensemble envelops the voice as it sings—almost in a whisper, as if speaking directly to the listener. The different times and worlds that unfold here are reminiscent of Berio’s *Sequenza*. Since he is a well-known composer with few recordings available, this album is a welcome treat for fans. On Track 17, an interview with Maier features him sharing some fascinating insights (in English only).
