Alkan: Complete Arrangements by Viana da Motta The Portuguese piano master Viana da Motta [1868–1948] was born to a father who was a music lover and showed talent for piano playing from an early age. He studied at the Lisbon National Conservatory of Music, then went to study in Berlin, where he studied under the Scharwenka brothers; he later became Franz Liszt’s last pupil in Weimar. He gained fame as a pianist and enjoyed a highly successful career, including teaching the highest-level classes at the Geneva Conservatory. Despite his own success, Da Motta seems to have had a deep understanding of the importance of Alkan, who was highly acclaimed at the time. Perhaps for this reason, he attempted to arrange Alkan’s works for organ and pedal piano for solo piano, four-hand piano, and two pianos. Alkan’s works are inherently complex, but hearing them neatly organized and beautifully rendered is sure to be a great delight even for Alkan enthusiasts. This CD is packed with 84 minutes of music, nearly reaching the disc’s capacity limit.
