Grechaninov (1864–1956) was the son of a merchant, but instead of taking over the family business, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory and went on to achieve success as a composer. He began his career in spectacular fashion, but when the Russian Revolution broke out, he left Russia and moved from Prague to Paris, eventually emigrating to the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen in the late 1940s. Although influenced by the Nationalist school, his later works took a neutral approach, incorporating elements of the neoclassical music that was popular in the United States at the time. He is a rather intriguing composer who wrote pieces grounded in the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church for his sacred works, while composing modern pieces for his instrumental works. This collection of works for viola consists mostly of previously unpublished pieces, but each one is captivating and vividly conveys the essence of this composer.
