This is the fourth volume in the complete collection of piano works (planned as an 8-disc set) by Heino Eller, one of the founders of Estonian music. The album opens with his First Piano Sonata, the first sonata he composed for his final exam at the Petrograd Conservatory. While this piece has a romantic character, it is filled with a unique sound that sets it apart from the works of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff; in particular, the heartrending melody of the Larghetto in the second movement lingers in the listener’s mind. However, to truly appreciate his strengths, one might turn to his shorter pieces, such as “Butterfly.” Each piece is rich in character and imbued with an indescribable sense of nostalgia amidst its complex timbres. The passionate ballad that closes the album is being recorded for the first time, featuring the authority of Eller and a magnificent performance by Sten Rasman. ---
