François Couperin: Collection of Works for Two Clavichords, Vol. 1 The “Couperin family” of France produced many musicians. Among them, François Couperin stood out as particularly talented. The best-known of his works is a four-volume collection of harpsichord pieces, which contains as many as 230 short pieces packed together to form small suites. While suites of that era were typically given common names such as “Allemande,” “Courante,” or “Gavotte,” Couperin’s works bear more varied titles; they are delightful pieces that incorporate names of people and words expressing emotions, as can be heard in this album. This collection of works for two harpsichords faithfully adheres to Couperin’s own notation—in which he wrote that “performance on two harpsichords is preferable” for several pieces typically played on a single instrument. When you actually listen to it, you will undoubtedly be surprised by its power and overwhelmed by its rich tonal palette. I’m looking forward to Volume 2 as well. (TOCCATA) [Track Listing] F.
