Leo Ornstein (1893–2002) was a pianist, composer, and educator born in Russia who made his mark in the United States. He lived to the ripe old age of 109 and continued composing right up until the year of his death, but because he rarely appeared in the public eye (having stopped performing in his 40s), he remained largely an “unknown composer” for a long time. Recently, however, as the number of recordings has gradually increased, his unique compositional style and titles seem to be gaining recognition. The TOCCATA label is currently producing a series dedicated to rediscovering his piano works. This album features two collections of his early works, along with “Morning in the Forest,” composed when he was 78 years old. It would be interesting to compare the “Russian Suite,” which is reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, with “Morning in the Forest,” which incorporates a variety of elements. Naxos Japan
