Lyadov, known for his richly colorful orchestral works such as the symphonic poems “Baba Yaga,” “Kikimora,” and “The Enchanted Lake,” actually composed a vast number of piano pieces. That said, these works have rarely seen the light of day; perhaps the only one that is barely known is “Music Box” (Music Tobacco Pouch / Music Treasure Chest). While his works are strongly influenced by Chopin and Schumann, true to his expertise in program music, even pieces simply titled “Impromptu” are magnificent works brimming with narrative and capable of appealing directly to the emotions. The melancholic melodies derived from Russian folk music are also captivating. This is an album that any piano lover should listen to at least once. Naxos Japan
