This is a collection of songs by Weinberg, who was born in Poland and spent most of his life in the Soviet Union. After fleeing to Minsk to escape Nazi persecution while still a student, he was influenced by Shostakovich and went on to compose numerous works, including 22 symphonies, seven operas, 17 string quartets, and concertos. Most of his works remained forgotten and unseen until recently, but signs of a revival now seem to be emerging. However, the field of “art songs,” such as those included here, remains largely unexplored. This TOCCATA series will surely serve as an important guidepost. Volume 1 is a collection of three song cycles centered on the theme of “childhood.” It is packed with fascinating songs, including charming pieces like “The Song of the Roll” and the breathtakingly beautiful “Lullaby.” [Comment provided by Naxos Japan]
