Composer David Matthews (1943–), born in London, has produced numerous works. This album is the third volume in his complete string quartet collection. It features relatively early works, offering a detailed glimpse into how he mastered contrapuntal techniques while studying the legacy of great string quartet composers such as Beethoven, Bartók, Britten, and Tippett. The Second String Quartet, for example, reveals influences of minimalism, offering a glimpse into the musical styles popular during that era—a truly fascinating aspect of the album. “Canon in the Mirror” is also a short piece intended for mastering counterpoint. Scriabin’s Prelude No. 4 was arranged as a birthday gift for his younger brother, Colin. It is said to be imbued with a sense of tribute to Scriabin, who had a profound influence on the brothers during their teenage years.
