Description:
British composer David Matthews has written seven symphonies and eleven string quartets to date. His brother is Colin Matthews. He is the composer who added “Pluto” to Holst’s *The Planets*, and is also known for having collaborated with his younger brother and Derrick Cook in his twenties to help complete the completed version of Mahler’s Symphony No. 10. He himself states that he composes to fuse two elements: “as the successor to Tippett and Britten” and “carrying on the musical legacy of the Viennese Classical period—beginning with Beethoven—through to early 20th-century composers such as Mahler and Sibelius.” The music of his we hear here is certainly avant-garde, yet it is strangely full of brightness. For example, the first movement of his Symphony No. 4—which he says was inspired by Beethoven’s piano sonatas—is a deeply captivating work in which a resounding melody echoes throughout, as if showcasing the lustrous sound of the strings at every turn. The simply structured No. 10 is a short piece, lasting only 13 minutes, but as he is said to love birdsong, it is packed with a surprising variety of sounds. Naxos Japan
