Description:
Although his name is Tchaikovsky, he is not the composer of the “Symphony No. 6 in B-flat minor.” He studied piano under Lev Oborin and composition under Vissarion Shebalin, Nikolai Myaskovsky, and Dmitri Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory, eventually becoming one of the leading Russian composers of the latter half of the 20th century. The renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich held his works in high regard and introduced them to the United States, but unfortunately, his reception there was lukewarm. Recently, however, signs of a resurgence have begun to appear, and it seems there are many fans in Japan who love his works. As you’ll hear, many of his works are quite serious in tone, but once you witness the surprising warmth he displays in his short balalaika pieces, your perspective on him may take a complete 180-degree turn.
