London Philharmonic Orchestra / Edward Gardner

Gardner, Britten's foremost expert. Led a handpicked LPO and recorded Britten in full! Sinfonia da Requiem was written in 1939, at the age of 26, as a commissioned work to commemorate the 2,600th anniversary of the accession of the Japanese emperor to the throne. Although it was accepted at first, it was not performed because a requiem was inappropriate for a celebration and its content was too Christian. The work was dedicated to the memory of Britten's parents and premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1941. Winter Words" is a collection of sentimental songs originally composed for tenor and piano, with texts from eight poems by Thomas Hardy. It is a world premiere recording with a new orchestration by Robin Holloway (the orchestral version was first performed in 2021 by the LPO under Gardner, with Spence singing solo). The Prince of Pagoda is a ballet by Britten. Britten wanted to arrange his own full-length ballet into a dramatic orchestral suite. This was ultimately not possible, but Gardner has now selected music from the ballet to create the suite. The percussion section of the LPO enlivens the world of the story with gamelan-style sounds.
