The recording of the 2021 performance of *A Midsummer Wedding*—a massive 700-page work that took Tippett 16 years to complete—is now available. This performance marked the opening of the LPO’s 2021–22 season and was also the first concert featuring new Principal Conductor Edward Gardner. It received rave reviews on-site, with critics calling it “a truly auspicious start” and noting that “Gardner, the orchestra, and the chorus were all outstanding, making for an unforgettable performance.” *A Midsummer Wedding* was Tippett’s first major opera; he first conceived the idea in 1939 and completed it after several interruptions, including the war. Guided by the belief that “the words of an opera should be such that they cease to live the moment they are separated from the music,” he wrote the libretto himself. Set on the day of the summer solstice, the story follows the protagonists, Mark and Jennifer, as they overcome various difficulties (all of which take place within an illusion) and ultimately return to the real world; dance plays a major role in the work. Above all, the orchestra—which demands both delicacy and virtuosity—shines throughout, magnificently showcasing the LPO’s true strength. Edward Gardner (Conductor) Born in Gloucester in 1974. He has served as Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2021. He studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, where he was a student of Colin Metter. He has served as Music Director of the Halle Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Glyndebourne Tour. He has been Principal Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic since 2015 and Artistic Advisor to the Norwegian Opera & Ballet since 2022. King International
