Description:
150th anniversary of Mengelberg's birth and 70th anniversary of his death (1871.3.28-1951.3.21): a wide range of sessions and live performances with the Concertgebouw Orchestra! This year (2021), Willem Mengelberg (March 28, 1871 - March 22, 1951), the greatest conductor born in the Netherlands, is commemorated simultaneously 150 years after his birth and 70 years after his death with this 31 CD box set by Scribendam in England. Mengelberg was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, to a father of German descent who was a sculptor. In 1891, he became the conductor of the Lucerne Staatsoper, and in 1995, at the age of just 24, he became the principal conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. He led the orchestra for the next 50 years, developing it into one of the world's leading orchestras. The exquisite ensemble and overwhelming expressiveness of Mengelberg & the Concertgebouw attracted the composers of his time, and in 1898, R. Strauss famously dedicated his symphonic poem "Life of a Hero" to the duo. When Mahler made his first guest appearance as a conductor with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1902, he and Strauss hit it off perfectly, and when Mahler made a guest appearance in Amsterdam, Strauss did not allow him to stay at his hotel, but instead invited him to stay at his home and enjoyed endless musical discussions with him.He was also a close friend of Tchaikovsky's brother, Modesto, who gave him a score with Tchaikovsky's writing on it when he played it. In Beethoven's performances, he also used the data on Beethoven's own tempo and total playing time given to him by his teacher, which he wrote in the score, and in the 1920s he became popular with the public as an embodiment of Dutch culture, and was voted the "most popular In 1922 and 1927, "Het Leven" magazine voted him the most popular Dutchman in its readers' poll of the 20 most popular Dutchmen, and he won the number one spot twice in a row, beating out many celebrities.
