Felix Clarie Weatherall, known as Ross From Friends, is a young producer influenced by a wide range of genres, from hip-hop sampling culture to ’80s Eurobeat, high-energy music, and Italo disco. Having released tracks on labels such as the underground powerhouse *LobsterThermin* and *MagicWire* (a subsidiary of *R&S*), he was rapidly gaining attention for his exquisite dance tracks that blend melancholic melodies with raw beats—and that’s when Flying Lotus reached out to him. The deal was sealed in the blink of an eye—even to his own surprise—and in April 2018, he released his debut work, *Aphelion EP*, on *Brainfeeder*. Going beyond the realm of lo-fi house, which has been gaining popularity in recent years, he has rapidly earned acclaim with an exciting sound that demonstrates his excellent compatibility with the label. This album, *Family Portrait*, fully showcases Felix’s experimental yet delicate sound design and his exceptional sense of melody. The album title, *Family Portrait*, suggests that his family has had a significant influence on his musical background. When he thinks back to his childhood, he always remembers his father either producing music with analog equipment or spinning records on the turntable. He grew up discussing music with his father, sharing music with him, and learning a great deal about music from him. In 1980s London, at the height of the rave scene, Felix’s father—who had built his own sound system and was active in the scene—acquired a bus in 1990 and planned to load up the sound system with his friends and tour Europe. Traveling through France, Belgium, and East and West Germany (their return journey took them through a unified Germany), and beyond, they would spontaneously launch events in various cities—no matter what the venue—whenever they found a space, sharing their passion with local people through the cutting-edge dance music of the time, such as high-energy, Italo disco, proto-techno—the cutting-edge dance music of the time—and shared their passion with the local people. It was through an introduction by a friend who had joined them in support of this idea that Felix’s mother—who had been documenting the entire journey—came into the picture. From the story of how his parents met to old VHS tapes of family moments, everything reveals that dance music has always been at the center of Felix’s life.
