The performance is a special elegance created by a thorough study of the score in colored pencil, This album is a compilation of works by three leading French composers, Claude Debussy, François Couperin, and Maurice Ravel. Fazil Say produced this album during the time of the pandemic, so it reflects that atmosphere of the time. The album title, "Sad Birds," is named after the second piece in Ravel's "The Mirror," which, with its five movements, is one of the most comprehensive and interesting pieces in the piano repertoire. Difficult to play, but exceptionally powerful, Fazil Say spent many months working on it. Debussy's Suite Bergamasque, one of the most important piano works he wrote as a young man, began work on this piece in 1890 and was published in 1905. The third movement is "Moonlight," one of the most famous piano pieces of all time. The other piece on the album is François Couperin's 21st Ordre in E minor. This was recommended to him by a harpsichordist friend in Istanbul, and since it was a very unusual piece, he arranged it for piano.Music and poetry come together to create a special elegance. During the pandemic lockdown period, we recorded these works in 2023 after a thorough study of them in colored pencil, as we did with the recorded disc of "Bach: Goltberg Variations." Written by three brilliant French composers, these works have had a profound influence on a wide variety of piano repertoire, and they have been a major influence on a variety of piano repertoire.
